Grape seeds are rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC), a subgroup of polyphenols. In plants, these secondary compounds perform protective functions, for example against oxidative stress, microorganisms, and environmental influences. The high density of polyphenols in the oil-rich grape seed is directly related to the need to protect sensitive fatty acids from oxidation.
In the human body, OPC are mainly discussed in the context of antioxidant networks and vascular health. They can interact with proteins and membrane structures and thereby contribute to the stabilization of structural components. Although no specific EU health claims are currently approved for OPC themselves, their biochemical properties and their use in antioxidant-oriented preparations are well described.
The acerola cherry (Malpighia glabra) is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C and additionally provides a spectrum of accompanying compounds such as flavonoids and carotenoids. Vitamin C is proven to contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, to the normal function of the immune system, and to normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels. In this way, vitamin C complements the polyphenol-rich OPC component with clearly defined and legally communicable functional profiles in the form of authorized health claims.
